Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened is a documentary film about Billy McFarland and the failed Fyre Festival of 2017. The film, directed by Chris Smith, features interviews with associates of McFarland; employees of the companies involved; the concert's financiers; festival staff and contractors; and festival attendees. The documentary was released on Netflix on January 18, 2019.
The film was met with a positive response from critics upon its premiere. On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 92% approval rating with an average rating of 7. 7 out of 10 based on 60 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Fyre smolders with agonizing tension when a party in paradise goes awry, but this slickly assembled documentary reserves its greatest horror for damning observations about the fallacy of opulence. " Metacritic, which uses a normalized average, assigned the series a score of 76 out of 100 based on 25 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".
In reviewing Fyre and Fyre Fraud, a similar documentary that premiered on Hulu, The A. V. Club stated that "if you have to choose only one to watch, Fyre is the better film - though given the additional layers of intrigue surrounding these films, there's an argument to be made they work better as messy halves of a PR-damaged whole.
